Textual Game
Analysis : 'Reading into Braid'
22/04/2023
One of my earliest academic essays, textual game analysis intends to detail and present how the 2009 game Braid intentionally breaks its own genres rules of play through its mechanics, narrative, and visuals. In order to enhance the later narrative experience towards the end of the game as the player learns of the true nature of the game. The changing of the context behind their actions taking over the course of the game.

Braid itself is fascinating mechanically as it gives the player the ability to rewind time; however by the end of the game you realise you as the player character have (by progressing through the game) unknowingly commited immoral actions, as the reality of your situation changes, you are not saving the princess, but are infact her assailant.
Rather than this narrative being structured around the gameplay, its structure bends to meet the plots demands. Detailing the overarching narrative and its context throughout the different elements of gameplay.
